Five steps to indulge in a healthier morning routine

I belong to the crew welcoming snug Canadian winter morning under blankets. However, I must admit to finding it difficult keeping up with a healthy morning routine in winter.

Challenging myself through a five step routine when it is colder helps me make healthier morning choices. I call these steps, winter indulgences because they play an active role in making my day healthy and happy.

What are my five steps to a healthier winter morning?

Step One: Indulge in a glass of water

After a restful night’s sleep, I begin the day by hydrating through a glass of water. Adding lemon to it is also an Ayurvedic technique of getting the digestive system moving. It helps jumpstart my day with a touch of Vitamin C.  

Step Two: Indulge in making your bed

As trivial as it may seem, this simple action of making my bed, sets my day in motion and starts the morning with a feeling of accomplishment. My subconscious self receives a sense of confidence to act on the many more daily tasks with a positive tone.

Step Three: Indulge in exercise           

This step is challenging in winter. To combat the resistance I feel towards exercising I rely on what I call the ‘herd culture’. I switch on a YouTube video of my favourite exercise Vlogger and virtually make myself part of a team, who are keen on exercising despite challenges. The idea is to develop confidence and strength by a supportive community in exercise. Joining a neighborhood group in morning yoga or a run could also be energizing.

Step Four: Indulge in positive thinking

Positive morning thoughts set the tone of the day. Being a spiritual person, reading spiritual passages guides me positively. Meditation also brings an overall calm.

Another way of indulging in this could be by writing down three reasons why I am grateful that morning. Establishing a foundation of gratitude helps me maneuver difficult aspects of the day ahead.

Step Five: Indulge in a morning shower

The last step to my winter morning routine is my favourite. I turn on some enjoyable music and sing along while enjoying a shower. It has been proven that the brain releases dopamine when listening to music and oxytocin when we sing. These chemicals have the power to reduce stress and make us happier. Wouldn’t that be an ideal every day morning?

My five steps of morning indulgences take me a long way through the rest of the day. I am always looking to improve or add new aspects to this routine. I would love to learn from you about any tips you may have in making your morning healthier and happier.
