Five steps to indulge in a healthier morning routine

Morning Peace

I belong to the crew welcoming snug Canadian winter morning under blankets. However, I must admit to finding it difficult keeping up with a healthy morning routine in winter.

Challenging myself through a five step routine when it is colder helps me make healthier morning choices. I call these steps, winter indulgences because they play an active role in making my day healthy and happy.

What are my five steps to a healthier winter morning?

Step One: Indulge in a glass of water

After a restful night’s sleep, I begin the day by hydrating through a glass of water. Adding lemon to it is also an Ayurvedic technique of getting the digestive system moving. It helps jumpstart my day with a touch of Vitamin C.

Step Two: Indulge in making your bed

As trivial as it may seem, this simple action of making my bed, sets my day in motion and starts the morning with a feeling of accomplishment. My subconscious self receives a sense of confidence to act on the many more daily tasks with a positive tone.

Step Three: Indulge in exercise

This step is challenging in winter. To combat the resistance I feel towards exercising I rely on what I call the ‘herd culture’. I switch on a YouTube video of my favourite exercise Vlogger and virtually make myself part of a team, who are keen on exercising despite challenges. My go-to exercise video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GS_z6FG_jqE

The idea is to develop confidence and strength by a supportive community in exercise. Joining a neighborhood group in morning yoga or a run could also be energizing.

Step Four: Indulge in positive thinking

Positive morning thoughts set the tone of the day. Being a spiritual person, reading spiritual passages guides me positively. Meditation also brings an overall calm.

Another way of indulging in this could be by writing down three reasons why I am grateful that morning. Establishing a foundation of gratitude helps me maneuver difficult aspects of the day ahead.

Step Five: Indulge in a morning shower

The last step to my winter morning routine is my favourite. I turn on some enjoyable music and sing along while enjoying a shower. It has been proven that the brain releases dopamine when listening to music and oxytocin when we sing. These chemicals have the power to reduce stress and make us happier. Wouldn’t that be an ideal every day morning?

My five steps of morning indulgences take me a long way through the rest of the day. I am always looking to improve or add new aspects to this routine. I would love to learn from you about any tips you may have in making your morning healthier and happier.

How will you be resilient in the face of COVID-19?

Here is our choice: We either let the pandemic shake our inner compass or we find our inner north. What do you choose?

I know this is a difficult choice because I am making it every day however I believe it can be achieved through community support and inner strength. Today I want to share with you five resources that are helping me navigate through these challenging times

1.Good News First!

I want to choose to focus on positive news articles every day. Yes, this has been possible for me through a simple email sign up to media outlet that has been filling my inbox each morning with an email consisting of good news from around the world.

I stumbled upon this media outlet while desperately searching for positive news and it has made my mornings much more optimistic. Visit this link to know more: https://goodnewsfirst.co/#rec8270610

2. We: A manifesto for women everywhere

My homeowner was intuitive enough to understand how difficult it has been for me to be an international student quarantined without my family in Canada. She offered me a book and made the world’s difference.

This book is helping me voiding negativity and relying on my inner self to be resilient. It connects me to a larger community of women that have been strengthened in facing similar challenges.

3. Goodnight with Dolly

I am a child at heart and I never wish to grow up. The familiar act of hearing bed-time stories is relaxing. One of the favourite country singers, Dolly Parton, has begun a YouTube channel to read bedtime stories for kids.

In case you think this may be a resource for your kids or you, follow the link into dreamland: https://youtu.be/3ia-ozHDaLs

4. Meditation

I have always complained about how I did not have the time to meditate. Now I’m taking action to change this. A variety of YouTube guided meditation videos help me on this journey. Oprah and Deepak Chopra have also offered free meditation for 21 days to us all

5. Science of Wellbeing- Yale University

One of Yale’s most popular courses is offered for free online. I have the time and I do not have to take a student loan to benefit from this program. This is an exciting new opportunity for me amidst a world of chaos.

Four healthy winter activities in Toronto

A letter from Harvard Health states that outdoor activities are good for our health. I am eager to involve myself in such activities however, the winter chills can be dissuading.

To motivate myself, I created an infographic and pasted it by my calendar. Here is what motivates me to bundle up and brave Toronto’s snow and ice:

I would love to know more about what outdoor activities you enjoy in winter.

My Story About Healthier Choices

Knowing what healthy looks to you!

I am a daughter, a friend, a sister, a student and a responsible citizen.

While I am happy to be all of these things, the glass is still half full because there is so much more I can be. And the secret to ‘Becoming’ is today’s healthy choices.

I learnt this secret on relocating to Canada a year ago. How do people live in a country frozen for a major part of the year? How do they glow without the sun? The answer came to be piece by piece while noticing the neighbor that bikes every morning, the old couple that walk to the park and the friends that love salad!

I didn’t take to biking or salad, but I do try to choose pro-health. Through this blog and healthier choices, join me in becoming more!
